Discovering New Artists And Art Spaces With Open Studio

There are so many artists in the Hudson Valley, that sometimes it’s hard to keep track. Events like Poughkeepsie Open Studio make it easier for the local community to discover, appreciate and connect with new art through this annual event.

Poughkeepsie Open Studio event organizers Jean Hinkley and Alexa Comuniello, put together a self-guided tour that directed visitors to meet artists, see murals, visit galleries and film studios all over Poughkeepsie. The event also had spontaneous performances at the Poughkeepsie Underwear Factory and the Cunneen Hackett Theater. Both organizers Hinkley and Comuniello serve on the City of Poughkeepsie Public Arts Commission and the pair told The Goodie Drop that they were “excited to collaborate with artists and community members to orchestrate an art-filled weekend!”.

The Goodie Drop’s first Open Studio stop was “Reason and Ruckus” located at 305 Main Street Poughkeepsie, NY. This space hosts weekly events curated by owner Su the Producer (Serena Domingues). Reason and Ruckus was also full of art from new local artists like Ann LeBron from Fishkill. LeBron creates art using photos, paint and old tile. LeBron says she was inspired by up-cycling old tile and “putting out positive messages” with her art.

This space was full of a beautiful owl collection, performance areas and house music spun by grammy nominated D.J. Yvonne Turner a.k.a “The Dub Queen” digging in her digital crates. The owner Robert Natal, shared why he created this space on Mill Street saying,

“I love Poughkeepsie, this is a place

Poughkeepsie Open Studio started in 2015 around Father’s Day weekend. This year a total of 10 galleries and 40 artists participated for the two-day event on June 18th and 19th (Juneteenth). Organizers say that the event is meant to welcome all artists to participate and bring new ideas in a variety of ways like pop-up shops or live performances. Hinkley added that this experience “gives people a better understanding of what drives artists to create".
