It's Call Time For Powerhouse Theater Season 2022

Last weekend, Shakespeare’s “The Tempest” was adapted and directed by Shaun Patrick Tubbs into a short play that was performed by students attending The Training Company program hosted by Powerhouse Theater at Vassar College.  Opening night for The Tempest took place on Friday, July 15, 2022, followed by two more shows that weekend at an outside performance space run by the Environmental Cooperative at 50 Vassar Farm Lane in Poughkeepsie, New York..

The play was free and open to the community as part of the “Powerhouse Theater” season at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York.  Powerhouse Theater season means that hundreds of actors, writers, directors and supporters of the art of theater gather in the Hudson Valley every summer ready for call time!

These students of their craft did not hold back, as they dived right into their characters in front of a live audience with only two weeks of preparation in their corner. Director Tubbs spoke to The Goodie Drop about the students dedication to the production and how they incorporated some of the talents and skills they already had.

“Do They are an amazing group! I had the opportunity to see them audition and cast them for this. I had no doubt that they could do it! We could have done a longer version of this, but we wanted to have that time to make it play.”

The director also said they created a world around the play adding original music to show.

One of the actors, Emma Skinner  is also a musician and she brought her violin all the way from Virginia to the training program.

Skinner added, “It was incredibly fun. It was built around what instruments people in the cast played. So everyone who played an instrument or could sing came in and we just went through the script and we figured out where to best fit music in.” -  Emma Skinner  (Senior at Vassar College)
